Having recently been promoted, we caught up with James (Lead Analyst – Customer Decisions) about his analytics journey at Vanquis so far...
 

Congratulations on your recent promotion!

Thanks. I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to move up to a lead analyst role within ECM credit risk strategy. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my 11 months here so far, in particular meeting all the great people who work here. I’ve been really impressed with the culture within the bank, in particular the focus on doing the right thing for the customer. One thing I would like to see more of is collaboration across teams and that’s something I’ll continue to strive for in my new role.

What were you up to before you joined Vanquis?

Before joining Vanquis I had worked in a similar role at HSBC for 5 years.

Tell us a bit more about your role and what you’ve been working on…

I’m was recently promoted to lead analyst on the credit risk strategy team on the existing customer side. I joined just as the new affordability regulations came into force which has had a big impact on our existing customer activity. My main focus has been on making improvements to our CLI affordability strategy and processes so we can deliver the best outcome for our customers and the business.

We believe a balance of career and personal development is important, how has Vanquis supported you in your own development?

Being a small bank, you have the opportunity to step up and take on added levels of responsibility than what you might at an equivalent role at other banks.

There are very clear guidelines as to what is expected at each analyst level so you can measure yourself against these to see what areas you need to improve. In my experience my managers have been very good at suggesting projects that will help to build on these areas.  

What’s your favourite thing about working here?

My team and most of the teams we have regular contact with all work in the same office which means more productive meetings and it’s easier to get things done.

There is a big focus on getting the right outcome for the customer and we are frequently in discussions with our colleagues in customer services around how we can improve our processes to improve the customer journey.

I feel like I’ve got a good work life balance and that it’s actively encouraged by managers.

What is your advice to someone considering roles at Vanquis?

I would definitely advise going for it. If you’re committed to progressing in your career then Vanquis will offer you all the support you need to develop your skills and keep moving forward.
