Having recently been promoted, we caught up with Shiu (Lead Analyst – Decision Science) about his analytics journey at Vanquis so far...

Congratulations on the promotion, Shiu! What do you think made you successful?

Working at Vanquis has given me opportunities to understand and develop myself both personally and professionally. Whilst I am naturally curious, I have learned to always ask questions and embrace new challenges as it provides the opportunities to develop your skill set and enrich your experiences. I am delighted that my achievements have been recognized with the promotion and I look forward to seeing where I can add more value to the team.

What was your background before joining Vanquis?

I’ve worked in various industries, from Consultancy, life insurance and general insurance. My experience involved applications development, underwriting, pricing, customer management and more recently analytics.

Tell us a bit more about your role here…

I work in the Decision Science team, which acts as analytics support for Vanquis and the wider Provident Financial Group. We typically build scorecards to support the credit decisions undertaken by our Credit Strategy and Exposure Management Teams. I’ve been involved in refining our regulatory capital models, reviewing our provisions models and also testing the application score algorithms in our new FICO systems.

We believe a balance of career and personal development is important, how has Vanquis supported you in your own development?

Vanquis offer lots of internal courses, which anyone can book onto and attend. There are many types of courses from classroom-based to online learning and even some audio ones as well. You are actively encouraged to develop yourself through participating in any of these courses. Some of these courses are available on your mobile so you can learn outside of work ie. on your commute to work.

What’s your favourite thing about working here?

It’s the colleagues you work with every day. It’s a friendly and sociable office environment, with much collaboration between the various teams in the office. There is a big focus around the customer and the commercials so it’s positive that we are heading in the right direction.

Do you have any advice to someone that might be considering a role at Vanquis?

Consider what type of organisation you would thrive in and whether your values are compatible with those of Vanquis. Whilst it is important to have the right skills for the role, I think it is possibly more important to be able to work effectively and collaborate as a team.
