Our home in Chatham

For more than 15 years, Vanquis has been one of the largest employers in Medway (Kent). It’s home to our largest UK contact centre and almost 1,000 of our colleagues across, not just Customer Contact, but our teams in Tech, Digital, HR, Risk, Compliance, Fraud and more.

Based in the Chatham Maritime area, our office is a short distance from the main station with easy access to the rest of Kent and London. But apart from excellent transport links – what are the things that make our Chatham office a great place to work? We asked Talent Acquisition Partner Neil Hollands to share his top five reasons he enjoys working here…

The people

It might sound like a cliché, but the people here are really welcoming and friendly. It’s a lovely sized business where you can get to know so many people - I’ve worked here for 16 years and met some great colleagues and friends along the way. This isn’t just limited to Chatham, I manage a team that’s also based in Bradford so I often visit up there, and it has exactly the same friendly culture.

The campus environment

We’re based on a university campus which we share with the Uni of Kent, Uni of Greenwich and many other local businesses. We’re spread across two of the buildings here, which I really like as it means you can vary your days and get some fresh air between meetings. There are brilliant facilities on the campus too – on-site coffee shops, places to eat and lots of space to sit outside or take a walk on your breaks, which is particularly nice in the summer months!

The sociable area and Chatham Maritime

Only a couple of minutes’ walk from the office is Chatham Dockside and there’s so much over there. There’s an Outlet shopping centre, loads of restaurants (see my next point!), an ODEON cinema (which we get discounted tickets through our Perks at Work platform), a selection of pubs and bars, two gyms, a trampoline park and even a gin distillery… all right on the river looking over the marina. We sometimes head over after work as a team and I know lots of other people in the office do too.

The food

I’m a foodie, and it bodes well here. Over at Dockside there are lots of restaurants – Nandos, Pizza Hut, Creams, a couple of Italian restaurants, an American diner to name a few. On treat days or pay day that’s where you’ll find me at lunch! There are options to stay onsite though, we have two subsidised canteens where you can get good meals for as little as £2.50. There’s also a Starbucks and the university canteen a stone’s throw away that we make good use of. Of course, there are fridges too if you like to bring your own food in.

The history

Not boring I promise! Over the road is the Historic Dockyard, which is a really popular visitor attraction. We’ve hosted a few business events over there which have been great. Interestingly they’ve shot some popular TV shows and films there in the time I’ve worked here… you must have heard of Call the Midwife and Ocelet. A few colleagues even spotted Jude Law and Robert Downey Junior whilst they were filming Sherlock Holmes. So we’re always on the look out!
